Monkey D. Luffy, protagonist of ONE PIECE is named Luffy. This name comes from the English word Luffy which literally means "sailing against winds". This is the name Eiichiro Oda felt was most appropriate for the captain. ODA further pointed out that Lufei was blessed with exceptional fortune. Only those with both strength and luck are capable of great feats. Monkey is the last name of Lufei, which is also known as "monkey", in English. Luffy's emblematic animal is also called a monkey.
